On 15th March 1941 the Ranger air group squadrons were rearranged to meet requirements of Atlantic Fleet. Each Carrier was to have two fighter squadrons and two scout squadrons.
VF-4 became VF-41, VB-4 became VS-41; VS-41 became VF-42 and received the new F4F Wildcat fighters.

During November 1940 the Wasp air group squadrons were rearranged to meet requirements of Atlantic Fleet. Each Carrier was to have two fighter squadrons and two scout squadrons.
VF-7 became VF-72 on November 5th, and VB-7 became VF-71 on November 19th and got F4F Wildcats.
