Yorktown was commissioned on 30 september 1937
Note: All navy squadrons were renamed on 1 july 1937.
The scouting squadron that operated from cruisers became VCS instead of VS (i.e. VS-5B became VCS-2, VS-6B became VCS-3 and VS-9B to 12B and 14B became VCS-4 to 8 respectively.
Observation squadron from battleships (VO-1B to VO-4B) became VO-1 - VO-4 respectively.
